Schüco AWS 70.HI Installer London
The Schüco AWS 70.HI spec
AWS 70.HI is Schüco's high-insulation aluminium window, built on the 70mm AWS platform. Below are the published figures our fabricators work from. Note that Schüco publishes a frame-only Uf for this system rather than a whole-window Uw, because Uw depends on the glass, the spacer and the size of the unit.
| Basic depth | 70 mm |
| Frame face width, from | 51 mm |
| Uf, from | 1.5 W/m²K |
| U-value for a typical glazed unit, from | 1.2 W/m²K |
| Acoustic Rw, up to | 48 dB |
| Air permeability | Class 4 (BS EN 12207) |
| Watertightness | Class 9A (BS EN 12208) |
| Wind resistance | Class C5 / B5 (BS EN 12210) |
| Security | PAS 24 available, burglar resistance up to RC3 (BS EN 1627) |
| Glazing thickness, up to | 62 mm |
| Max vent size | 1700 × 2500 mm |
| Min vent size | 470 × 540 mm |
| Max vent weight, up to | 200 kg |

Sources: Schüco AWS 70 system documentation and the Apex Glazing AWS 70.HI data sheet. AWS 70.HI does not appear in the Passive House Institute certified component database and should not be specified as a certified Passivhaus window. Of Schüco's aluminium windows, AWS 90.SI+ is PHI-certified for the cool, temperate climate at Uw 0.79 W/m²K.
AWS 70.HI configurations
The opening styles available on the platform. These can be combined in a single mullion-and-transom assembly, so a typical façade might run fixed picture units below tilt-turn vents above, with corner posts handling 90° geometry.
| Configuration | Use case | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed / picture | Large unobstructed apertures, stairwells, gable ends | Lowest cost per m². No vent, pair with adjacent opener. |
| Side-hung casement | Standard rear/side elevation windows | Most common; full opening for cleaning and egress. |
| Top-hung | Above-counter, weather-exposed elevations | Limited opening, sheds rain easily, secure-when-vented. |
| Tilt-turn | Apartments, upper-floor, secure ventilation | Tilt for trickle vent, turn for full opening / cleaning. |
| Reverse-opening | Outward inaccessible, balconies, tower blocks | Cleaning from inside without external access. |
| Corner post (structural) | Frameless 90° corners | Requires structural opening sign-off; striking visual. |
| Coupled to a matching Schüco sliding system | Matched façade with sliding doors | Coupling profiles let the window and door lines read together across an elevation. |
Why Apex for AWS 70.HI in London
AWS 70.HI is more demanding to install correctly than a standard aluminium window. Thermal-break continuity through the install detail, airtightness tape at the perimeter and squareness on the tilt-turn hardware all matter. We've installed AWS 70.HI on residential and small-commercial projects across London, including a low-energy retrofit in north London where airtightness detailing was part of the brief.
| What we bring | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Schüco UK fabricator network | Direct procurement, accurate lead times, factory hardware sets, no parts mismatch on site. |
| Airtightness tape detailing | External weather-tight and internal vapour-control tapes applied to the install detail. This is what a blower-door test actually measures. |
| Thermal-bridge install detail | Frame seated on insulated sub-frame where required, not bridging to lintel steel. Coordinated with architect detail. |
| Tilt-turn hardware calibration | Schüco's tilt-turn hardware needs precise sash adjustment; we set it on day-of-install and snag at handover. |
| FENSA self-certification | Reg 40373. Building Regs sign-off in your name within 28 days. |
| A written guarantee from the people who fitted it | Schüco is a system house, not an installer, and states that there is no universal Schüco warranty period. Your cover comes from us: 10 years on the frame, 5 years on the sealed units. |
What an AWS 70.HI install costs
AWS 70.HI is fabricated to order, so a fitted price depends on the size and configuration of each opening, the glass specification, whether you need RC2 or RC3, the finish and site access. We price it after a free survey rather than from a list. Every Apex quote covers the frame, glazing, fitting, removal of the existing window, FENSA self-certification under Reg 40373 and our 10-year guarantee.
Frequently asked
What is Schüco AWS 70.HI?
Schüco AWS 70.HI is a German-engineered aluminium window system built on a 70mm basic depth. The .HI stands for High Insulation, the variant of the AWS 70 platform with the enhanced thermal break. Schüco publishes a frame-only Uf from 1.5 W/m²K, a frame face width from 51mm, sound reduction up to 48 dB Rw, and burglar resistance up to RC3 to BS EN 1627. Almost every opening type is available on the platform, from turn-tilt to pivot and barrier-free window doors.
What's the U-value of Schüco AWS 70.HI?
Schüco publishes a frame-only value, Uf from 1.5 W/m²K, rather than a headline whole-window Uw, because Uw depends on the glass, the spacer bar and the size of the unit. The Apex data sheet for the system quotes a U-value from 1.2 W/m²K for a typical glazed unit. Approved Document L sets the limiting standard for a replacement window in an existing dwelling at 1.4 W/m²K or Window Energy Rating Band B, so the system meets it comfortably.
How much does AWS 70.HI cost fitted in London?
It is made to order, so the fitted cost depends on the size and configuration of each opening, the glass specification, whether RC2 or RC3 is required, the finish and site access. We price it after a free survey rather than from a list. The quote covers the frame, glazing, fitting, removal of the existing window, FENSA self-certification under Reg 40373 and our 10-year guarantee.
Is AWS 70.HI Passivhaus certified?
No. AWS 70.HI does not appear in the Passive House Institute's certified component database, and it should not be specified as a certified Passivhaus window. The Schüco aluminium windows that do carry PHI certification for the cool, temperate climate are AWS 90.SI+, certified at Uw 0.79 W/m²K, and AWS 75.SI+ optimized and AWS 90.SI+ optimized, both certified at Uw 0.80 W/m²K. The PHI criterion for that climate is a component Uw of 0.80 W/m²K or better.
What size can AWS 70.HI windows be?
Schüco publishes a maximum vent of 1700 × 2500mm and a minimum vent of 470 × 540mm, with vent weight up to 200kg and glazing thickness up to 62mm. Larger apertures are built up as mullion-and-transom assemblies rather than as a single vent, which is how most large AWS façades are made.
Does AWS 70.HI meet RC2 security?
Yes, and higher. Schüco publishes burglar resistance up to RC3 to BS EN 1627 for AWS 70.HI, with the appropriate locking, hinge and laminated glass package. PAS 24 is available across the range. RC2 is the level normally asked for on ground-floor and easily accessible openings; both RC2 and RC3 are specifications you order the window to, so they need to be on the quote.
Is Apex Glazing a Schüco trained installer?
Apex Glazing installs Schüco systems through the Schüco UK fabricator network, and our fitters work to Schüco's published install detail. We have completed AWS 70.HI installations across London, including a low-energy retrofit in north London where airtightness and thermal-break continuity were part of the brief. If you want to see our credentials before committing, ask at survey and we will show you the paperwork.
What guarantee comes with AWS 70.HI?
It comes from us, not from Schüco. Schüco UK states that because Schüco does not manufacture or install the finished product, there is no universal Schüco warranty period, and your warranty is provided by the company you contract with. Through Apex Glazing that is 10 years on the frame and 5 years on the sealed glass units. Anyone quoting you a 20-year Schüco guarantee is quoting something Schüco does not publish.
