Two systems, one decision
Almost every enquiry comes down to a single choice: a fixed roof or a moving one. A veranda has a fixed pitched roof glazed in glass or polycarbonate. It is permanently weather-tight, cheaper, and the better answer if what you want is a dry, bright covered terrace. A bioclimatic pergola has a flat roof made of motorised aluminium blades that rotate closed for rain cover or open for sun and ventilation, so the same structure works in July and in November.
Both are full aluminium construction, both span up to 6m post to post, and both use hidden water drainage and hidden fixings — rain is taken through the frame and down inside the structural posts, so there are no external downpipes or brackets on show.
The veranda comes in three builds. The slimmest is the contemporary one, with a 173mm post and a 170mm wall plate. The reinforced build takes a 200mm post and will span a full 6m width on just two posts, with nothing in the middle of the opening. The third build is thermally broken, which is what lets you glaze the sides and turn the veranda into an insulated winter garden rather than a covered terrace. All three use slim 56mm rafters and drop to a 7° pitch, which matters when you are working under a first-floor window or a low eaves line.
The louvres, the motor and the rain sensor.
Each blade is a 229mm x 45mm extruded aluminium section. A 6m x 4m pergola carries up to 28 of them, driven by a 24V motor with a handset supplied as standard. Add the Bluetooth module and the same roof is controlled from a phone or tablet. The motor carries a 2-year guarantee.
The optional rain sensor closes the roof on its own, which is the feature that matters when the structure is over garden furniture and you are not at home. Anti-freeze protection holds the blades from operating below 2°C so the mechanism is not driven against ice. With the blades open, the frame is rated for a snow load of 70–85 kg/m², and a static report is available for building control or structural sign-off.
Integrated LED strips are optional, in plain white or RGB. Glass side walls and glass sliding doors are available on both the pergola and the veranda, which is how the structure goes from a shaded terrace to an enclosed garden room.

Veranda. Fixed-roof aluminium structure glazed in glass or polycarbonate, spans up to 6m, variable pitch down to 7°, slim 56mm rafters on all builds, hidden water drainage and fixings. Three builds: contemporary (173mm post, 170mm wall plate, glass sliding doors), reinforced (200mm post, 170mm wall plate, spans 6m in width on two posts with no central post), and thermally broken (193mm post, 210mm wall plate, rooflight profile), which is the build specified when the veranda is to be enclosed and insulated as a winter garden.
Wall-mounted against the house or free-standing anywhere in the garden. Options across both systems: glass side walls, glass sliding doors, integrated LED strip lighting in white or RGB, and polycarbonate or glass roof glazing on the veranda. On the pergola, add the Bluetooth control module and the rain sensor. If the intention is a heated, insulated room rather than a covered terrace, specify the thermally broken veranda build with glazed sides — it is the only build in the range with thermal breaks in the frame.
Seven standard colours on the pergola plus over 100 RAL shades to order; five standard colours on the veranda. All powder coating is Qualicoat approved. Matt, satin and textured finishes are available across the RAL range on request.
