Housing stock in Hounslow
Hounslow's own neighbourhood chapter describes the town as running "from Victorian and Edwardian terraces, to inter-war suburban housing", with the wider area "mainly low density inter-war properties with generous front and back gardens" and Victorian pockets off Whitton Road.

Frequently asked about Hounslow
Do I need planning permission for new windows in Hounslow?
For most houses, no. Hounslow's adopted Character, Sustainability and Design Codes SPD (2024) states that "most houses in the borough do not require planning permission to install new or relocate existing windows and doors". Listed buildings, flats and the two Article 4 conservation areas are the exceptions.
Which conservation areas cover Hounslow town?
St Stephens, Hounslow Cavalry Barracks, St Paul's Hounslow West and Spring Grove, with Heston Village to the north. Hounslow lists around 29 conservation areas borough-wide; there is no "Hounslow Central" designation.
Is there an Article 4 direction here?
Not on windows. Hounslow's windows Article 4 covers only Bedford Park and Gunnersbury Park, both in the east of the borough. The borough-wide Article 4 directions relate to HMO conversion and commercial-to-residential change of use.
What works well on a 1930s Hounslow semi?
The front bay generally sets the character. Bay and bow units keep the original massing, flush casements suit the plainer interwar elevations, and slim aluminium works well on rear extensions where a larger opening is wanted.
Do you cover Heston and Cranford too?
Yes, we work across TW3, TW4 and TW5 including Heston, and Cranford Village is a further Hounslow conservation area nearby.
The Hounslow position in plain terms
Hounslow town is the administrative centre of its own borough, and the planning picture here is less restrictive than the borough's eastern end. Around 29 conservation areas exist across Hounslow, of which five sit in or near the town, and none carries an Article 4 direction on windows.
The adopted policy is Policy CC4, Heritage, in the Local Plan of September 2015. The council's own characterisation work - the Characterisation and Growth Study of August 2024 - records that the Great West Road, opened in 1925, "was a catalyst for mass ribbon-development of semi-detached housing", which is why so much of TW3 to TW5 shares a single window vocabulary.
Where permission is needed, the SPD is clear about what fails: replacements whose materials, design, colour, proportion and finish differ from the original prevailing types are normally refused. Where it is not needed, the choice is genuinely yours.
