Frequently asked about Isleworth

Which conservation areas cover Isleworth?

Isleworth Riverside, Spring Grove, Woodlands Grove and Osterley Park. There is no "Old Isleworth" or "St John's Road" conservation area on Hounslow's list, and Syon Park is not a conservation area - it is a listed house and registered park referenced in the Local Plan's views policies.

Do I need permission for replacement windows in TW7?

For an unlisted house, generally not. Hounslow's adopted design SPD states that most houses in the borough do not require planning permission to install new or relocate existing windows and doors, and no Isleworth conservation area carries an Article 4 direction on windows.

What about a flat or a converted maisonette?

Flats do not have householder permitted development rights, so a change of window generally needs permission, and your freeholder or managing agent will usually have their own requirements about matching the rest of the block.

Does being local actually change anything?

Practically, yes: shorter survey lead times, and a genuinely quick return if a handle, hinge or seal needs adjusting after fitting. We fit across west and south west London from here.

What does Hounslow prefer where permission is needed?

Its SPD says the council will normally refuse replacements where materials, design, colour, proportion and finish differ from the original prevailing types, and that substituting a timber sliding sash with a PVCu or aluminium replacement will not normally be acceptable in those cases.

Isleworth: our base, and its four designations

Isleworth is in the London Borough of Hounslow, and it is where we work from. Four conservation areas cover TW7 - Isleworth Riverside, Spring Grove, Woodlands Grove and Osterley Park - and none of them carries an Article 4 direction affecting windows or doors.

The adopted policy is Policy CC4, Heritage, from the Hounslow Local Plan of September 2015. The window detail is in the Character, Sustainability and Design Codes SPD adopted in 2024, whose Part A5 sets out what the council expects on new and replacement windows and doors.

The council's preference, stated in that SPD, is for original windows to be retained where possible, with secondary glazing and draught proofing used to improve performance, and replacement in traditional materials and styles where replacement is unavoidable.

Osterley Park is a conservation area in its own right. If your property adjoins it, the setting of the park is a material consideration even where your own building is unremarkable.
